True Blood HBO – The Facts
Charlaine Harris Books
“True Blood” is a fictional story (I hope!) which is set in a town called Bon Temps, Louisiana. The series has been adapted from the books written by the author Charlaine Harris who has been writing books since 1980 but only fairly recently gained real recognition for her work with “The Sookie Stackhouse Series” (also named “The Southern Vampire Mysteries”).
The series is currently being shown on Home Box Office (HBO) the cable network. It was produced in part by HBO and in part by Alan Ball who up till now was better known for writing the hit movie “American Beauty” and for producing the HBO series “Six Feet Under”.
Ball has obviously gained a lot of recognition for his work and among the awards he has received are an Academy Award, an Emmy, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe, all for the aforementioned movie and series.
The initial showing of “True Blood” took place on the 7th September 2008 and Season 2 began on the 14th June 2009. Viewers have a total of 12 episodes of Season 2 to look forward to and then a further Season 3 will begin to be filmed before Christmas of this year, just to make fans even more ecstatic.
The idea behind “True Blood” bases itself on bringing the vampire world (along with a number of other fascinating creatures) together with the human world. Its in general a harmonious world, which is a real change from the tendency to pit human against vampire – the traditional theme.
The main plot behind both the books and the “True Blood” movie is based on Sookie Stackhouse, played by the actress Anna Paquin. Anna Paquin claimed fame back in 1994 when she was awarded an Academy Award for best supporting actress in the film “The Piano”. She has since played in all three X-Men movies as the character “Rogue”. She also runs her own production company – Paquin Films – with her brother Andrew Paquin. A lady destined for fame and fortune for sure!
The first “True Blood” series fairly quickly gained recognition and won among other notable awards a Golden Globe. The producer – Alan Ball – had already produced the hit serial “Six Feet Under”, which has been screened around the world since its first showing on HBO back in June 2001.
On a day wile waiting for a dental appointment, Mr Ball decided to go into his local Barnes and Noble book store where he came across Charlaine Harris latest novel – “Dead Until Dark” which is the initial book of “The Sookie Stackhouse Series”.
Mr Ball quickly set his mind upon the idea that this novel should be made into a television serial and therefore approached Charlaine Harris with the conception. She agreed even though she had been approached previously with similar proposals. She liked Balls enthusiasm and took well to his vision for how the book should be created into a television drama.
