DEFINITELY DEAD: the 6th book in THE SOOKIE STACKHOUSE NOVELS
“I can’t kill him for you. I’d have to take too many steps backward.”
- Claudine
Sookie Stackhouse, barmaid extraordinaire, is once more the talk of the town with the newest addition to the growing Southern Vampires Family by Charlaine Harris. DEFINITELY DEAD is the 6th book to be released that has gotten lots of people glued to their seats in sheer reading bliss!
Sookie was trying to live a normal life but that was quite impossible since she herself was not normal. You see, Sookie is a telepath. If that was bad enough, imagine living in a world were vampires and other mythical creatures come knocking at your door. Nope, they aren’t there to scare but they sometimes come over for a social visit.
Sookie seems to be fairly adjusting to all the weird things that have happened to her life which started the night a vampire walked in Merlotte’s, the local bar in Bon Temps where Sookie works. She had been to so many crazy and dangerous adventures. She got herself hurt countless of times. Made friends and enemies alike in the supernatural world and met several men who in one way or another became a part of her life.

Definitely Dead
In Definitely Dead , Sookie is summoned by the Queen of Louisiana to come and claim her inheritance from her recently deceased-again cousin, Hadley. This makes Sookie a bit apprehensive for two main reasons, one is that she and her cousin were never that close and the second was Hadley was the queen’s favorite lover before she died. That means Hadley was a vampire. Sookie was then again thrust into vampire business.
Someone doesn’t want Sookie to dig to deep into her cousin’s affairs. When she was on a date with the were-tiger, Quinn, they were attacked by some unknown Weres. Knowing Sookie’s popularity with the supernatural community, it could have been anyone.
Cleaning out an apartment should be easy, even if it belonged to a vampire cousin, right? That’s what Sookie was trying to tell herself. The thing is, easy seems to evade Sookie. A body was found stashed in Hadley’s closet. It has been there for weeks and since the place was protected by powerful spells, so does the body preventing it from being discovered.
Call it an ill-intentioned welcoming gift. Amelia Broadway, Hadley’s landlady, made those spells. She would unknowingly become a part of Sookie’s life later on after they sort of bonded in a very bloody way.
In the midst of another vampire-related injury, Sookie received another devastating blow, thanks to Eric Northman. The vampire sheriff “forced” Bill Compton to reveal the true reason why he courted Sookie. The reason was a lot painful than anything Sookie has ever imagined. This resulted in Sookie banishing Bill from her life.
Untreated yet, she left the scene and went straight to Hadley’s apartment to find solace. Claudine, her true to life fairy godmother, treated her injury.
New Orleans, the realm of the Queen of Louisiana, was transformed into a tourist must see when the vampires came out. The city is home to the vampire headquarters which boasted of blocks of buildings with superb security that befits a vampire royalty. Tourists swarm the area in hopes of seeing one of the most famous vampire personalities, the Queen Sophie-Anne Leclerq.
It was Sookie’s first time to make a courtesy call on a royal, albeit a dead one. It was her first time seeing the famous vampire and her cousin’s former lover. The queen, aware of Sookie’s ability wants her to join them in a vampire summit as a member of her delegation.
Another thing is that Sophie wants to know what really happened to her favorite consort, Hadley. Amelia and a few witchy friends volunteered to re-create the last night of Hadley’s vampire life. The queen along with Sookie and some bodyguards joined the witches in the re-creation.
Andre, the queen’s most trusted personal guard, revealed through a little trickle of Sookie’s blood that she has fairy blood in her. Fairies have a very strong impact on vampires; they are very tempting for them. That sort of explained why Sookie is so attractive to the “supes”.
Sookie has barely recovered from her last injury, when she and Quinn were placed in a very dangerous situation. Somebody was paid to kidnap her, taking Quinn along. Of course they managed to escape and found out who Sookie’s new fans were. Eric, bounded to help Sookie due to their blood-bond, was also there to lend a hand.
After all the troubles, it was time to party! Sookie was of course invited to a vampire soiree in honor of the royal wedding between the queen and Peter Threadgill, the vampire king of Arkansas. It was supposed to be a night of merriment. Sookie was dressed to kill with an admiring date beside her, it was a perfect night. But it seems that even in a party, trouble just won’t leave Sookie alone.
In this new book, a lot of things happened. It only shows that things are getting more interesting as the series progresses. Sookie is no longer a bystander in the supernatural world; she is now in the middle of it. I really am hanging at the edge of my seat as I read this book. The concept of having vampire royalties and kingdoms within the United States was a fresh way of looking at how vampires conduct their business.
Sookie also met a lot of new characters in this book. First there was Diantha, the part-demon niece of the vamp queen’s demon lawyer Mr. Cataliades. Then she met Hadley’s landlady, the witch Amelia Broadway. The Pelts, Alcide’s ex-girlfriend’s family, came by for a visit still pestering Sookie for any info on Debbie’s disappearance. Peter Threadgill, the king of Arkansas and a lot of new “supes”
But for me the most thrilling part of the story is of course Sookie’s love life! It is now out in the open that she has gained a new admirer in Quinn, the legendary were-tiger. It was also revealed that she is of fairy descent which rather explains why she is so attractive to the men of supernatural origin. Quinn, in my opinion still needs to prove himself.
Alcide returns and shows how he values Sookie, which is very disappointing in a way. Eric is still making a claim on Sookie, stating this is due to the blood bond they share, but was sort of relieved to have why he is attracted to Sookie explained. Bill turns out to be more of a disappointment for me. He hurt Sookie more than all these guys combined.
Charlaine Harris really knows her stuff. The Sookie Stackhouse Novels get more interesting and entertaining with each page, with each book. It is a guaranteed fun read that won’t leave you bored or thinking that you have read this before. Trust me that will not happen here. The series is a breath of fresh air to book lovers everywhere. (that is if you’re with the living hehehe).
