Club Dead-Sookie Stackhouse

Charlaine Harris Books

What do you get when you mix a telepathic charming barmaid, a vampire boyfriend, a vampire boyfriend’s boss who seems to have taken a “strong liking” to that vampire’s girl friend , another “supe” who happens to owe the vampire boyfriend’s boss who also seems to have fallen for the telepathic charming barmaid’s charm…..uh, are you guys still with me? I bet you are.

From the way the series is progressing I am guessing that you guys are thirsting for more? Do you get asked if it is worth the effort to read? I honestly tell those that ask “NO”. I tell them “You get one hell of a read!” CLUB DEAD brings back all our favorite characters for another round of action, adventure, humor and mystery. Prepare for another dose of CHARLAINE HARRIS . Oh and I forgot to mention in the previous review, watch out for another star sighting!

The story begins with Sookie and Bill having some down time in the relationship department. It seems that vampire boyfriend here is so busy with a secret project. He tells Sookie that he will be leaving because of this project. He then proceeds to explain that the assignment was given by the Queen of Louisiana . Oh goody, more vampire politics. She knew he was lying about something.

Trouble seems to be headed for Sookie’s way… again. Eric made sure though that she would be guarded. He once again enlisted the service of the “very famous” Bubba. The charming Viking vampire then cleared some questions in Sookie’s head.

Later on, a stunned Sookie finds out that Bill is missing and that the suspected perpetrators are fellow vampires under the order of the King of Mississippi . Eric is also unsure if Bill is still “alive”. If that is quite a bomb for Sookie, she has not heard everything yet. Eric then told Sookie that Bill has plans of leaving her for another woman. A dead woman, that is. It seems that the vampire boyfriend was not just a liar but a two timing vampire to boot!

Sookie is once again placed in danger as she races to help rescue her jerk of a boyfriend. Sookie was aided by Alcide (Al-see) Herveaux , another supernatural who owes Eric. Alcide is a Were or a werewolf and an all-around nice guy. He took Sookie to a nightclub where the elite supernatural society in Jackson, Mississippi hangs out. The vampire owner named the favorite haunt Josephine . The Weres called it CLUB DEAD behind their backs.

Sookie seems to be a very strong magnet for danger. She gets herself almost manhandled by one of the members of the Were gang. She got herself some wounds from this encounter but she got something better in return. She met the vampire king of Mississippi, Russell Edgington .

From then on it was a game to rescue Bill from his kidnappers. Sookie gained a new admirer in Alcide and Eric was becoming more persistent with his intentions. She got “staked” and got even with the “other woman” (good for Sookie!).

CLUB DEAD is a fast paced one as compared to the first two books in the series. It is funnier, more action-packed and more supernaturals are present. If the first two books got you hooked, the third will make you want to read more. You will be so immersed in the lives and existence of Sookie and the supernatural creatures that surround her!

I noticed that as the series progresses, a brand new kind of supernatural creature is introduced. In the first book, vampires and shape shifters were there. In the second book, a maenad and a dwarf were added. In CLUB DEAD , werewolves are now added to the list.

One by one these “supes” are getting more and more defined in the series. Their characters are more developed. We, the readers, are beginning to see more of what CHARLAINE HARRIS can do. She weaves an excellent tale of supernatural meets the normal world which gets better and better as you finish each book.

One thing I had a problem with though, was that in the first three books, it seems that Sookie always gets hurt. And for what price? I mean, sure she helps because she has a good heart. But until when will she be able to handle getting hurt every time she gets involved with vampire business? I begin to think that I am right in saying that Sookie is a danger-magnet. Because if you come to think of it, danger really wasn’t present until she met Bill, her first love who happens to be a vampire.

Well, the things one does for love. Anyway, who am I to complain? I love the series and I guess I have to just accept the fact that Sookie will always be in harm’s way since she is already knee-deep with the supernatural world.

Well, if you have a vampire ex-boyfriend who still wants to be around, a very devastatingly charming Viking vampire for an admirer and a nice-guy Were willing to warm you up, I sure would want to be in Sookie’s shoes alright.
