From Dead To Worse
Charlaine Harris Books
From Dead to Worse – took a while to come out and when it finally did and I had “devoured” it within hours of opening the front cover, well, em, what can I say…? Lost for words.
A bit disappointing, if I’m to be honest, and I’m sorry Charlaine but I’ll now explain why.
The book takes on the same look and feel as many of the previous wonderful books in the Sookie Stackhouse series. The characters come to life and its lovely to read how their lives intermingle and their relationships weave together and then apart. Charlaine has very nicely brought the characters back from the previous books in the Southern Vampire Mysteries, and introduced them into From Dead to Worse and put in some finishing touches where there needed to be. I think perhaps this is so she can then move forward with these and other characters in the next book, if that makes sense?
But other than this, the book seems to meander along in no particular direction and I have to admit I felt like putting it down on occasion and then coming back to it later, which is unusual for me.
You see, the plot does not thicken in this novel. Usually, the plot does thicken as you read on in a decent novel. So why bother, I was asking myself? I bothered because I kept looking and kept looking and did not want to put the book down until I was satisfied I had found what I was looking for – mystery, adventure, excitement… Yes, mystery. As I read elsewhere – “this book series is called the Southern Vampire Mysteries, so just where was the mystery in this book?” Well said!
So basically, instead of me meandering on in a lost cause sort of way, let me just finish by saying a few more words…
By all means buy this book, particularly if you are reading the whole Sookie Stackhouse series – and I think you should be reading it as it is superb! At least if nothing else you can say you did read it and you have the whole series. If you are not reading the whole series there is no real reason to pick out this book as the one to pique your interests, not that most people would pick out the 8th book in a series to pique interest.
And that ladies and gentlemen is pretty much all I have to say about From Dead to Worse. Short and not so sweet. Lets hope for better in the next book – Dead and Gone.
